Top 10 WordPress plugins to compress images

To make our website look nicer it is important to use images. On the other side we need a fast website. Using images slows down the website. In this article we will speak about the top 10 WordPress plugins to compress images.

Images are a ranking factor. Sitespeed is a ranking factor. We need to use the maximum benefit of both these ranking factors to make our website a success on search engines. Especially on Google.

The solution for the problem is to compress images. By compressing images we will reduce the size of the image. The more we reduce the image, the faster it will be downloaded by the server.

The other side of the coin is that we will lose quality of the image when we compress the images too much. We need to find an equilibrium. Quality needs to be relatively good, while the size of the image needs to be as low as possible.

According to a recent study. Websites in top 10 of the Google search results all have an average of 8 images per 1.000 words. In order to rank well, images are very important. But lowering the amount of bytes to be loaded means, a faster website.

We need to make the size of the images smaller…

WordPress plugins to compress images are a great piece of software to do that. We will now go further to the Top 10 WordPress plugins to compress images…

WordPress plugins to compress images

Wp Smush it

This is one of the most used wordpress plugins to compress images. It has a free version and a paid version. We can compress JPG, JPEG, PNG and GIF images.

Settings can be adjusted to compress every image directly on upload. We can compress them individually or do this in bulk. The free version can only compress a certain amount of images at one time.

Another difference between the free version and the paid version is that the pro version will reduce the size of the image 5 times more. (according to WP Smush it)

One way or the other, this is one of the best WordPress plugins to compress images.

EWWW Image Optimizer

With EWWW image optimizer we can compress images. And change the file format of the image.

Together with WP Smush it, they are the best plugins to compress images.

They do not have a limit for compressing. It works autmatic.

There is a free and a paid version of the plugin.

Imsanity

The third in line is the Imsanity plugin. It will compress images but has a few extra’s.

We can convert BMP to JPG. And we can also set a max-width, a max-height and a minimum quality.

CW Image Optimizer

CW Image Optimizer is on my list for WordPress plugins to compress images. It works almost the same way like WP Smush it. With the only difference, that the compression will go a little bit faster.

When having a few hundred images to compress, this can make a big difference.

The images do not leave the server. This can be handy when we compare it to WP Smush it.

To make the plugin run we need to use littleutils image optimization tools. It is not a common plugin for a person with no further experience.

Photoshop

We are talking about WordPress plugins to compress images. Photoshop is not a plugin.

But when you have Photoshop on your system this is the best way to compress images!

I will explain you why…

WordPress plugins to compress images have a free and a paid (pro) version. The free version will be compressing the image for about 10 to 20% of the original size.

If you would like to compress further (without losing too much quality) you need to switch to the paid or the pro version. This can be a very expensive proces.

Because in most cases, we have to pay a certain amount of money per compressed image.

In photoshop we can compress images as far as we want. We open the image in photoshop. Go to “File” and there we look for “Save for Web And Devices”.

There we can choose the percentage of quality we want. And we can adjust the dimensions of the image.

There is also a way to compress images automatically by using actions in Photoshop.

Other Helpful Plugins For Images

Not really wordpress plugins to compress images. But still good to use as a backup check to make sure everything is added correctly.

SEO Friendly Images

We all know the importance of having ALT Tags for images. This is used by search engines to understand the image. Because they can not crawl images.

SEO Friendly Images will check if every image on your website has the correct ALT tags.

You can also easily set a Title tag.

Lazy Load

Lazy Load is a plugin that works with JQuery. Using the plugin will improve the page load. Because images will only be loaded when they are visible in the viewport.

Conclusion

It is important as a SEO ranking factor to have images on your website. According to a study, webpages in top 10 rankings have about 8 pictures per 1.000 words.

All those images on the page, means too much bytes to load. Using WordPress plugins to compress images is a great way to make the amount of bytes go down. And reducing the size of the images.

This will make the website load faster.
